Protocol in Charlotte
Sciatica
It is most commonly caused by a nerve root being "squeezed" from a disc protrusion.  This "squeezing" of the nerve can cause severe pain along the entire course of the nerve.  Most often down the buttock and the back of the leg to below the knee.

Herniated Disc
A herniated disc is a common cause of low
back pain. When the disc extends beyond the borders it is intended to stay in, the disc material can easily come in contact with a nerve.  When this happens, the pain can be quite debilitating for many people. This can also cause numbness & tingling.

Spinal Stenosis
When the spinal canal becomes narrowed by spinal stenosis it can cause pressure on the nerve roots.  The pain is often relieved, not by standing still, but by flexing the back or by sitting. There are varying degrees of stenosis and  an MRI is typically evaluated for the severity.

Bulging Discs
Discs that are designed to cushion and take the stress of our day to day actions can "bulge."  When they leave their normal space, they can press on nerves that can also cause a great deal of pain.  This term is commonly used to also describe a herniated disc.

Degenerative Discs
When discs are labeled as "degenerative," the actual meaning is that they are dying.  They are dying because they are losing their ability to nourish themselves.   Therefore, they begin to lose the ability to function in the manner they were designed.

Numbness and Tingling
"Pinched" would be a common way of
describing what happens to your nerve when the end result of numbness and tingling occur. The ending point of many nerves are your feet and hands, this is why many people with a disc condition feel those sensations in their hands and feet.
